Golden Rules for Applying Sealant (especially in small joints)
These rules are written with Bathrooms and Kitchens in mind but are not limited to.
- Remove any loose materials so that you have a stable base. De-grease joints with a solvent based cleaner
- Use the correct silicone/sealant for your joints, either High or Low modulus
- Use a proper profiling tool
- Look for the greatest gap & select the smallest tool to cover a gap of + 2-3mm either side. This applies to joints that are 90° to each other.
- Cut the nozzle at 90° ie: straight across
- Cut the nozzle to the width of the edge “Profiling Tool” that you have selected.
- Push the sealant into the joint
- Aim to have contact on only two sides (NOT three sides)
- Use an adapter guide to get smooth lines over transverse joints.
- Work in short sections
- Corners: Up First, then left to right
- Clean tools with paper tool after use for next time
