Fire Rated Sealants

Fire rated sealants from Soudal are used to seal service penetrations, control joints, and construction gaps in fire-rated walls, maintaining the fire and smoke resistance of the assembly. The range covers acrylic, silicone, and MS Polymer chemistries, tested and rated under AS 1530.4 for use in New Zealand and Australian commercial and multi-residential construction.

Passive fire protection that holds its rating and its flexibility.

Some fire rated sealants provide up to 4 hours of fire resistance, in their tested configuration, under AS 1530.4 while remaining UV resistant and low VOC, suitable for use in occupied buildings during application. MS polymer and silicone-based fire sealants stay elastic after curing, so rated joints continue to accommodate building movement without losing their fire performance over time. Acrylic-based fire sealants add acoustic attenuation alongside fire and smoke sealing, useful where a joint also needs to control sound transfer. See the full Sealants range for non fire-rated alternatives.

Choosing the right fire rated sealant

Service penetrations and control joints in fire walls. An MS Polymer fire rated sealant rated to 4 hours under AS 1530.4, suited to general passive fire sealing where UV exposure and low VOC are also required.

Acoustic-sensitive fire joints. An acrylic fire rated sealant, which combines fire and smoke sealing with high dB attenuation for party walls and separating floors.

Movement joints requiring fire rating. A MS Polymer or silicone-based fire rated sealant, which remains elastic after cure so it continues to perform in joints subject to ongoing building movement.

Technical differentiators

  • Fire resistance rating: Up to 4 hours under AS 1530.4, depending on product and joint configuration
  • Chemistry: Acrylic, silicone, or MS Polymer, each suited to different substrates and movement requirements
  • VOC and odour: Low VOC options available for use in occupied buildings
  • Movement after cure: MS Polymer and silicone-based fire sealants stay elastic, acrylic-based products are typically rigid once cured
  • Acoustic performance: Acrylic variants offer additional sound attenuation alongside fire compliance

Fire rated sealant application guidance

Fire rated sealants must be installed in accordance with the tested system configuration referenced on the product’s fire test report, including joint width, depth, and any backing material specified. Substitute products or untested configurations can void the fire rating of the assembly. Always confirm the specific fire test report or listing that applies to the substrate and joint type before installation, and retain documentation for building compliance records.

Fire rated sealants FAQs

What is a fire rated sealant used for?

Fire rated sealant is used to seal gaps, joints, and service penetrations in fire-rated walls, maintaining the assembly’s fire and smoke resistance rating as tested under AS 1530.4.

How long does fire rated sealant last?

Once cured, fire rated sealants remain in service for at least 15 years but if it is not damaged is likely to last the life of the building. Periodic passive fire inspections may require confirmation the sealant is intact.

Do fire rated sealants need to match a specific system?

Yes. Fire rated sealants are tested as part of a specific joint configuration, including width, depth, and backing material. Installation must follow the tested system referenced in the product’s fire test report to maintain the rating.

Can fire rated sealants be used outdoors?

FMS Polymer and Silicone fire-rated sealants are UV resistant and suited to external use. Remember that the external fire-rated joints still have to conform to what was tested in the fire report as to placement, substrates and depth of sealant.

Is fire rated sealant flexible after it cures?

This depends on the chemistry. MS Polymer and silicone-based fire sealants remain elastic after cure, allowing for ongoing joint movement, while acrylic-based fire sealants are generally more rigid once fully cured.
